The Welsh are serious about preserving steam with several lines in operation (all 1' 11 3/4" gauge). The lines are being expanded, at least in part utilizing volunteer labor. The trains are in daily use for mostly passenger service except for the slate mine line.

The engine facilities and trains at the base of Mt. Snowdon. This is a cog railway that utilizes both steam and diesel power.

This diminutive engine at a Welsh slate mine, built in 1905, isn't in regular daily use. Fortunately a group of VIPs was due to visit the next day so they steamed her up.
